A retired man from the Cardwell region this morning discovered he was the region’s mystery Saturday Gold Lotto division one winner after checking the ticket he received from his son as a gift.
The happy winner holds one of the nine division one winning entries across Australia in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 3887 on 20 October 2018. Each entry won the division one prize of $443,884.30.
In addition to winning division one, the man’s unregistered ticket also won division four, bolstering his total prize to $443,923.90.
Speaking to a Golden Casket official this morning, the man explained how he came to hold a division one winning ticket.
“I only checked it this morning! It was a present from my son,” he said.
“Wacko!
“It’s just been sitting here in an envelope. I meant to check it before but I forgot about it – I must be getting old and dottery!
“Lucky I remembered I had it.”
The regular Gold Lotto player shared he had won a few smaller divisional prizes over the years, but nothing quite like this.
He’s begun thinking about how he might use his windfall, including sharing it with those at the top of his Lotto List – his adult children.
“It will help boost the nest egg and I might spread some of it among the kids,” he said.
“It’s a nice little bonus!”
While many winners start celebrating their good fortune immediately, this down-to-earth local doesn’t plan on doing anything special just yet.
“Life goes on,” he said pragmatically.
“I’m sure we’ll have a bit of a family celebration once I see the money in the bank account.”
The winning entry was purchased at Cardwell Newsagency, 83 Victoria Street, Cardwell.
Cardwell Newsagency owners Lisa and Philip Gruber are thrilled their winner has been united with their prize.
It’s the first time Cardwell Newsagency has sold a division one winning entry since the couple took ownership of the outlet five years ago.
“That’s great to hear!” Lisa said.
“A win like this is good news that’s spread through our small community.
“Everyone’s been coming in asking whether the winner has been found. They’ll be happy to know it’s a local.
“We wish the winner all the very best and I hope it’s not long until we see another win in Cardwell.”
So far this calendar year, Monday & Wednesday Gold Lotto and Saturday Gold Lotto have created 146 millionaires across Australia.
The winning numbers in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 3887 on Saturday 20 October 2018 were 38, 14, 15, 42, 5 and 45, while the supplementary numbers were 8 and 22.
Across Australia there were nine division one winning entries in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 3887 – two each from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland and one each from Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.
The Lott’s division one winning tally has now reached 313 so far this calendar year, including 72 won by Golden Casket customers.
Last financial year, there were 290 division one winning Saturday Gold Lotto entries across the Lott’s jurisdictions, which collectively won more than $302.7 million.
