If you’ve always thought you lived in a lucky suburb or town, you might be right with research revealing those Aussie locations that scored the most division one lottery wins last financial year.
According to data crunched by The Lott and Lotterywest (see tables below), in the 12 months ending 30 June 2024, across Australia there were 476 division one winning entries from all lottery games that delivered more than $1.69 billion in division one prize money.
While Victoria had the most division one wins with 133, players in New South Wales enjoyed the most division one prize money totalling $679.2 million – more than twice the amount of the state that scored the second most division one prize money.
New South Wales’ tally was assisted by many Oz Lotto and Powerball jackpots – including one of the two division one winners from the record-breaking $200 million Powerball prize offered in February 2024.
FY24 also saw another historic lottery event when a single South Australian player scored a $150 million Powerball prize in May 2024, becoming the biggest individual lottery winner in Australian history.
Across Australia, a total of 344 millionaires were created by division one wins – the equivalent of almost one a day.
New South Wales welcomed the most newly minted millionaires, with 117 created from lottery wins during the 12 months.
The data also reveals the suburbs in each state and territory that were home to the outlets that sold the most division one winning entries.
- In Queensland, the postcode 4655 for Eli Waters/Urraween sold four division one winning entries.
- In New South Wales, the postcode 2000 for Sydney CBD sold four division one winning entries.
- In the ACT, the postcode of 2911 for Mitchell sold the territory’s biggest division one prize.
- In Victoria, the postcode 3000 for Melbourne sold four division one winning entries.
- In Tasmania, the postcode 7320 for Burnie sold the Apple Isle’s biggest division one prize.
- In South Australia, the postcode 5108 for Salisbury sold South Australia’s biggest division one prize.
- In the top-end, the postcode 0810 for Casuarina delivered the Northern Territory’s biggest division one prize.
- In Western Australia, the postcode 6054 for Bassendean sold two division one winning entries.
“From Burnie in Tasmania to Bassendean in Western Australia, Salisbury in South Australia to Sydney, hundreds of Aussies across the country experienced the indescribable thrill of a division one win last financial year,” The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said.
“Some players tell us they deliberately pick outlets that have recently sold a major lottery prize in the hope of continuing the winning streak, while other players choose different outlets, believing lightning won’t strike twice.
“While we saw pockets of major lottery prizes across Australian states and territories this year, it’s important to remember that a division one win can land anywhere at any time.
“As many lottery winners tell us, you’ve got to be in it for the chance to win it!
"It will also be interesting to see if this year's lottery hotspots continue their winning streak in FY25.”
