If you've always suspected your suburb or town might have a lucky streak, you could be onto something — new research has uncovered the Aussie hotspots that have racked up the most division one lottery wins in 2024.
According to data crunched by The Lott, in the 11 months ending 30 November 2024, across Australia there were 473 division one winning entries from all lottery games that delivered more than $1.58 billion in division one prize money.
While Victoria had the most division one wins with 135, players in New South Wales enjoyed the most division one prize money totalling $521.3 million, closely followed by Queensland with $477.5 million.
New South Wales and Queensland’s tallies were assisted by large Oz Lotto and Powerball jackpots – including division one winners from the record-breaking $200 million Powerball prize offered in February 2024.
This year also saw another historic lottery event when a single South Australian player scored a $150 million Powerball prize in May 2024, becoming the biggest individual lottery winner in Australian history.
Across Australia, a total of 273 millionaires were created by division one wins.
New South Wales welcomed the most newly minted millionaires, with 80 millionaires created from major lottery wins during the 11 months.
The data also reveals the suburbs in each state and territory that were home to the outlets that sold the most division one winning entries during the first 11 months of 2024.
- In Queensland, the postcode 4870 for Cairns/Earlville sold four division one winning entries.
- In New South Wales, the postcode 2000 for Sydney CBD sold four division one winning entries.
- In the ACT, the postcode of 2911 for Mitchell sold the territory’s biggest division one prize.
- In Victoria, the postcode 3000 for Melbourne CBD sold five division one winning entries.
- In Tasmania, the postcode 7015 for Lindisfarne sold the Apple Isle’s biggest division one prize.
- In South Australia, the postcodes 5108 for Salisbury/Salisbury Downs and 5554 for Kadina each sold two division one winning entries.
- In the top-end, the postcode 0812 for Leanyer delivered the Northern Territory’s biggest in-store division one prize.
- In Western Australia, the postcode 6062 for Morley sold three division one winning entries.
“From Morley in Western Australia to Melbourne, Salisbury in South Australia to Sydney, hundreds of Aussies across the country have experienced the indescribable thrill of a division one win so far this year,” The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said.
“Some players tell us they deliberately pick lottery outlets that have recently sold a major lottery prize in the hope of continuing the winning streak, while other players choose different outlets, believing lightning won’t strike twice.
“While we saw pockets of major lottery prize wins across Australian states and territories this year, it’s important to remember that a division one win can land anywhere at any time.
“As many lottery winners tell us, you’ve got to be in it for the chance to win it!
“One of the next big chances to start the new year as a division one winner is Saturday Lotto’s $30 Million Megadraw on Saturday 4 January 2025.
"It will also be interesting to see if this year's lottery hotspots continue their winning streak.”
