A rural-urban Melbourne suburb, Sydney’s bustling CBD and a Far North Queensland city; there have been a few surprise postcodes emerge as Australia’s lottery hotspots in 2020, with The Lott exclusively revealing the winning areas ahead of the upcoming $30 Million Megadraw.
Australia’s official lotteries, The Lott, along with Lotterywest have crunched the data (see tables below) and can exclusively reveal the postcodes, states and regions where the most division one wins occurred across all lottery games.
In the 12 months ending 30 November 2020, there were 477 division one winning entries held by lottery players across the country that delivered more than $1.22 billion in division one prize money.
Victoria had a rollercoaster of a year, but they finished on a high taking out the top spot for the most big prizes for the fifth year in a row with 134 division one winning entries scoring over $365 million in prize money.
While Queensland took out the State of Origin trophy this year, New South Wales and the ACT have bragging rights for the second-highest amount of division one wins with 107, compared to the Sunshine State’s 104. Players in New South Wales and the ACT can also boast about the largest amount of division one prize money with over $420 million.
It doesn’t stop there for the New South Wales and the ACT as they also take out the top spot for creating the most millionaires with 79, followed closely by Victoria with 65 and Queensland with 54.
The data also reveals the suburbs in each state and territory that are home to the outlets that sold the most division one winning entries.
- In Victoria, the postcode of 3337 for Melton sold four division one winning entries totalling more than $10.4 million.
- In New South Wales & the ACT, the Sydney CBD postcode of 2000 sold the most division one winning entries in the state, with three totalling more than $5.4 million.
- Queensland crowned a new winning postcode for this year, with 4870 for Cairns selling six division one winning entries collectively worth more than $6.24 million.
- In South Australia, there were five postcodes that sold two division one winning entries. Of these five, the postcode of 5000 for the Adelaide CBD sold the entries that scored the largest amount of prize money – more than $3.27 million.
- In Tasmania, the Devonport postcode of 7310 sold the Apple Isle’s largest prize worth $2 million.
- In the top-end, the postcode of 0860 for Tennant Creek delivered the Northern Territory’s largest prize of $4.8 million.
- In Western Australia, the postcodes of 6062 for Morley and 6210 for Mandurah both sold five division one winning entries totalling over $6.45 million and $3.42 million respectively.
The Lott’s spokesperson Bronwyn Spencer said 2020’s hotspots would soon have a chance to cement their reputations as a winning postcode or region.
“We’re kicking off the New Year with a bang thanks to Saturday Lotto’s $30 Million Megadraw on Saturday 2 January 2021. It will be interesting to see if division one wins from this draw – the biggest Saturday Lotto draw of the year – fall in any of 2020’s hotspots,” she said.
“While lottery wins can land anywhere, from time to time, we see pockets of wins in the same region or postcode emerge.
“This year we’ve seen a mix of hotspots, from bustling city centres to regional areas and smaller towns, proving that a winning hotspot can emerge anywhere across the country.
“We know that division one wins are welcomed anywhere and at any time, but breaking the incredible news to our division one winners this year has been especially rewarding. In a time of great uncertainty and plenty of challenges, it’s been a joy to hear the hopes and dreams our major winners have for their windfalls.
”From a young Adelaide dad who scored a multi-million-dollar division one after losing his job due to the pandemic, to a Victorian player who won twice in the same draw and an $80 million Powerball winner who simply wanted to splurge on a new television, we’ve heard a variety of amazing winners stories this year.”
Ms Spencer said only time would tell if the 2020 lottery hotspots continued to deliver.
“Some players flock to hotspots for their entries in the hopes it scores them a major prize, while others avoid them in the hope lottery lightning will strike elsewhere. Regardless, there is one thing that is guaranteed – you can’t win if you don’t have an entry,” she said.
