The Aussie suburbs, towns and regions where the most division one lottery wins landed in FY23 have been revealed ahead of this Thursday’s $60 million Powerball draw.

The $60 million jackpot for Powerball draw 1419 on Thursday 27 July 2023 is the second biggest jackpot offered by any Australian lottery game so far this year.

According to data crunched by The Lott and Lotterywest, in the 12 months ending 30 June 2023, across Australia there were 503 division one winning entries from all lottery games that delivered more than $1.59 billion in division one prize money.

Victoria finished the financial year retaining the title of the state with the most division one wins: 137 worth more than $409 million in prize money.

However, players in New South Wales and ACT scored the most division one prize money, with 130 wins worth more than $563 million in prize money. This tally was assisted by a single player scoring a $100 million Powerball prize in June 2023, becoming the second-biggest individual lottery winner in Australian history.

Across Australia, a total of 303 millionaires were created by division one wins – the equivalent of almost one a day.

New South Wales and the ACT welcomed the most newly-minted millionaires, with 88 created from lottery wins during the financial year.

The data also reveals the suburbs in each state and territory that were home to the outlets that sold the most division one winning entries.

  • In Victoria, six postcodes each sold three division one winning entries: 3172 for Springvale South / Dingley Village, 3802 for Endeavour Hills, 3754 for Doreen / Mernda, 3024 for Wyndham, 3075 for Lalor and 3000 for Melbourne.
  • In New South Wales and the ACT, the postcodes of 2141 for Berala / Lidcombe and 2530 for Dapto each sold three division one winning entries.
  • In Queensland, the postcodes of 4211 for Nerang / Pacific Pines and 4506 for Morayfield each sold four division one winning entries.
  • In South Australia, the postcode of 5118 for Gawler and 5045 for Oaklands Park each sold two division one winning entries.
  • In Tasmania, the postcode of 7018 for Howrah / Rosny Park and 7172 for Sorell each sold two division one winning entries.
  • In the top-end, the postcode of 0830 for Yarrawonga delivered the Northern Territory’s biggest division one prize from an in-store ticket.
  • In Western Australia, the postcode of 6430 for Kalgoorlie sold five division one winning entries.

The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said he was keen to see if last financial year’s lottery hotspots continued their good fortune in FY24.

“During the past twelve months, we’ve seen the history books rewritten with Australia’s biggest ever lottery jackpot – the $160 million Powerball draw – and a new titleholder for Australia's second-biggest individual lottery winner – last month’s $100 million Powerball winner,” he said.

“From Stratford in Far North Queensland to Strahan in Tasmania, Brisbane in Queensland to Busselton in Western Australia, hundreds of Aussies across the country felt the warm glow of a division one win last financial year.

“Some players tell us they deliberately pick outlets that have recently sold a major lottery prize in the hope of continuing the winning streak, while other players choose different outlets, believing lightning won’t strike twice.

“While we saw pockets of major lottery prizes across Australian states and territories last financial year, it’s important to remember that a division one win can land anywhere at any time.

“As many lottery winners tell us, you’ve got to be in it for the chance to win it!”

Mr Hart said up to one in six Australian adults were expected to have an entry in this Thursday's $60 million Powerball draw.

“So far this year, nine Powerball division one winning entries have collected more than $254 million in division one prize money. Perhaps we’ll add to that tally this week!” he said.

"It will also be interesting to see if last financial year's lottery hotspots continue their winning run."

Entries into Powerball draw 1419 on Thursday 27 July 2023 can be purchased at any licenced lottery outlet, online from thelott.com or via The Lott mobile app.
