Lottery records could tumble tonight if one Australian walks away with the entire $100 million Powerball jackpot.

After jackpotting for eight weeks, the Powerball prize has soared to $100 million – the equal largest prize Powerball has offered in the game’s 23-year history.

If one entry scores the mind-blowing $100 million jackpot, it will be the largest individual lottery prize ever won in Australia – easily surpassing the previous record of $70 million.

With a third of Australian adults expected to have an entry in tonight’s draw, the Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said he expected a frenzy of activity instore and online in the hours leading up to the draw’s close at 7.30pm AEST tonight.

“As the jackpot has climbed in recent weeks, so too has interest in Powerball and the $100 million prize,” he said.

“If last week is anything to go by, at the peak of activity we could see more than 6,000 entries a minute being processed across the country.

“My biggest tip for anyone planning on grabbing a chance to win the life-changing prize is to get in early. Don’t leave it until the last minute. Once you have that ticket in your hands you can relax and start dreaming about how you would play by your own rules if you won division one.”

The $100 million Powerball draw 1183 will take place on Thursday 17 January 2019. The draw closes at 7.30pm in Queensland, 8.30pm in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, 8pm in South Australia and 7pm in the Northern Territory.

Mr Hart said he would be standing by ready to confirm the life-changing win straight after the draw with any registered division one winners.

“We recommend people register their entries to a player’s card and ensure their contact details are up-to-date.  That means we know who you are and can break the amazing news to you. If your phone is ringing late Thursday night, you might like to pick it up!” he explained.

“Wherever you are in Australia, if you’re holding a ticket you’re in with a chance to win the $100 million prize.  Could we see a Powerball division one winner from one of Australia’s 2018 Lottery Hotspots?  Only time will tell!”

In 2018, there were 453 division one winners across Australia who took home more than $1.04 billion.
