In a bittersweet twist of fate, a Toowoomba man who continued to honour a cherished tradition he shared with his late wife by playing Saturday Gold Lotto each week pocketed $3.3 million in the weekend’s draw.
The Darling Downs resident held one of the six division one winning entries nationally in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 4571, drawn Saturday 10 May 2025, and takes home $3,333,342.29.
Lottery officials struggled to contact the winning man, as his registered phone number was disconnected, leaving them to patiently wait for him to check his ticket and come forward.
“I still can’t believe it,” he exclaimed.
“I’ve been playing Gold Lotto since it first started. The most I’ve ever won on a Gold Lotto ticket is $600, and I thought that was memorable!
“I’m a widower. My late wife and I have a set of numbers that we used to play together.
“Ever since she passed away, I decided to continue to play them, but when there’s a larger prize on offer, I’ll play a QuickPick.
“That’s exactly what I did this time, and it was the QuickPick that won division one!
“The only bummer about it is that she’s not here to celebrate the win with me. We used to play together. It would’ve been nice to share this moment with her, but she’s looking down on me.
“Every time I wake up in the morning, I ask myself if the win is real.”
With $3.3 million set to change his life, the Queensland retiree said he would seek financial advice before making any firm decisions.
“Luckily, I know a financial advisor, so I’ll be reaching out to her for help!” he revealed.
“I’ll probably share the win around a bit.
“Thank you so much.”
His winning 12-game QuickPick entry was purchased at Campbells News & Casket, 244 Ruthven Street, Toowoomba.
The winning numbers in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 4571 on 10 May 2025 were 1, 35, 18, 25, 45 and 38, while the supplementary numbers were 4 and 16.
Across Australia, there were six division one winning entries in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 4571 – three in New South Wales, two in Victoria and one in Queensland.
The Lott’s division one winning tally has now reached 402 so far in FY25, including 104 won by Golden Casket customers.
