South Australia’s largest jackpot during the past decade has landed in a regional community on the outskirts of Adelaide, with a loving dad in his 50s taking home last night’s $40 million Powerball jackpot.

The winner’s 25-game marked entry was the only division one winning entry in Powerball draw 1189, drawn Thursday 28 February 2019.

When an official made contact with the winner this morning, the man recounted how he discovered the life-changing news, having checked his entry after the draw last night.

“I was just sitting at home last night and for something to do I thought I would check my Powerball ticket,” he explained.

“I checked the numbers and recognised that a few of them were mine, so I double checked them again.

“I showed my wife and she said ‘this can’t be true, something must be wrong here’. We didn’t believe it until the news was confirmed this morning.

“We are over-the-moon!”

While every number has an equal chance of being drawn from the barrel of 35, seven of last night’s numbers from the main barrel fell between 2 and 14.

The thrilled winner revealed how he came to choose those remarkable winning numbers on his 25-game marked entry.

“I’ve been playing Powerball for about six or seven years and for a long time I was buying QuickPicks,” he said.

“A little while ago I thought I would change it up a bit and so I marked a coupon using my large family’s birthdates.

“Once I changed the numbers, I started to win a few small things here and there so I thought to myself ‘I’m not going to change these, I’m going to stick to them.’

“I’ve never won anything like this!”

As for what he intends to do with his $40 million prize, the level-headed man said he wasn’t planning anything extravagant.

“I’m not into flashy houses or cars – it’s all about family first,” he declared.

“We are quite involved in the local community in which we live. We’d love to give back to the charities and organisations close to our heart in the community.

“We’ve been doing it tough the last few years so this will make a whole world of difference to my family.”

The last time a single Powerball entry held by an Australian lottery player took home $40 million was in May 2014, when a father from Brisbane’s northside took home the entire prize pool.

The South Australian family man, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased his online entry was via OzLotteries.com.  Jumbo Interactive operates the popular OzLotteries.com website and OzLotteries App selling official lottery tickets as an authorised reseller of Tabcorp. Jumbo Interactive is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX:JIN).

The winning numbers drawn last night in Powerball draw 1189 on Thursday 28 February 2019 were 7, 5, 13, 4, 2, 14 and 11 and the Powerball was number 14.

Across Australia, there was only one division one winning entry in Powerball draw 1189 – the entry from South Australia.

The Lott’s division one winning tally across all Australian lottery games has now reached 256 so far this financial year.

In the 12 months ending 2018, there were 16 Powerball division one winning entries nationally who collectively took home $367 million. The biggest Powerball prize won during 2018 was $60 million, won in November by a man from Burleigh Heads.
