As the 15-day festival of Lunar New Year approaches this weekend, the Lott can exclusively reveal which Chinese Zodiac sign took out the most division one wins in 2019.

The team at the Lott have crunched the data and found that in the 12 months ending 31 December 2019, it was players born in the year of the Rat who landed the most division one wins (table 1).

The year of the Rat is the zodiac sign for people born in the years 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996. According to the zodiac tradition, people with the Rat sign enjoy saving and collecting and are optimistic and energetic.

2020 marks a new start to the zodiac cycle, and brings us to the Year of the Rat, posing the question — will we see Rat sign players continue to scoop division one wins this year, or will another Chinese zodiac sign have a more fortuitous year?

The Zodiac sign that had the second highest number of wins in 2019 was the Goat closely followed by the Dragon.

Those born in the year of the Snake and Dog may be hoping their fortunes will change in 2020, as they were the zodiac signs that won the least in 2019.

The Lott spokesperson Bronwyn Spencer said data from over four hundred registered division one and major prizes winners was analysed to decipher which zodiac sign had the most wins in 2019.

“2019 will long be remembered as a prosperous year for Australian lottery players with over 435 division one winning entries delivering more than $1.3 billion in division one prize money,” she said.

“When we crunched the data, we were interested to discover that those born in the year of the Rat had had a particularly winning year because we are about to enter year of the Rat in 2020.

“While we can’t say for sure why Rat sign players had such a winning streak, it may be because their optimistic and energetic nature encourages them to dream of that life-changing win.

“2019 also saw those born in the year of the Goat and year of the Dragon have a prosperous year and this may be because their sign describes them as strong and consistent meaning they may be regular players who never miss a draw.

“While last year wasn’t the most prosperous year for the Dog, those close to Dog sign players can be reassured that when they do win, their loyalty could mean it’s likely they will share it with their friends and family.

“It is the same for those born in the year of the Snake who are known as being plan makers. There is no doubt that when they did land a major prize, they would have been able to enjoy it well with thoroughly made plans.

“Whatever your Chinese Zodiac sign is, it’s important to remember that lottery games are entertaining games of chance and every number on your ticket has an equal chance of being drawn, no matter what year you were born in.

“So while we have seen the year of the Rat have a fortuitous year in 2019, it’s important to note that these vary from year to year and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in 2020, and if it will truly be the Year of Rat.”
