Another Australian lottery record was smashed today when the jackpot of one of the nation’s longest-running lottery games, Lucky Lotteries, climbed to $38.2 million for the first time in its 88-year history.

Lucky Lotteries first began in Australia in 1931 as the State Lottery to help fund New South Wales hospitals before the name was changed in 1957 to the Opera House Lottery. This lottery was designed to raise funds for the construction of the now-iconic Sydney Opera House.

Since then, hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of 1st Prizes and Jackpot prizes have been won as Lucky Lotteries continued to be a customer favourite across the Lott’s jurisdictions.

While each Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw delivers a guaranteed 1st Prize of $200,000, it also gives players the chance to win a multi-million-dollar jackpot prize that climbs higher after each draw if it isn’t won.

To date, the largest Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot prize ever won was a whopping $38,185,000, which was claimed by a woman from Sydney’s northern suburbs in 2011.

The Lott spokesperson Bronwyn Spencer said that record tumbled today as the jackpot climbed to unprecedented levels following today’s Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw.

“This year is shaping up to be a record-breaking year for Australian lotteries. Earlier this month, we saw a new record set for the biggest ever lottery prize won, and now Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot has reached to new heights,” she said.

“The great thing about Lucky Lotteries is that there’s no sharing of prizes so when this jackpot is won, one winner will take home a prize of more than $38 million – and possibly much, much more depending on how much higher the jackpot climbs!”

With only 200,000 numbers available in each Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw, Ms Spencer said the draws were selling out fast.

“Lucky Lotteries is like a raffle, so there are only a set amount of numbers in each draw. Once all of these numbers have been bought, then a draw is held,” she explained.

“As the jackpot has been soaring, so too has the frequency of Lucky Lotteries draws. We encourage anyone who wants a chance to win this record prize to get in early.

“Who knows when the jackpot will be won, but when it is it will set a new Australian record for the game and we will no doubt have one very happy jackpot winner.”

The Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot prize is now $38.2 million for draw 1206 while the Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot is now $2.84 million for draw 10268.
